Our Family
Canela
Canela is our faithful watch dog. After a near fatal accident as a puppy, a good friend brought her back to health. Abbie adopted her when she was a puppy and she has been living at Luz since we opened. She is full of love and enjoys meeting new guests! She is a great guard dog, and such a sweetie! Most guests have a harder time saying “bye” to her than us!
Abbie
A dream come true. Luz en el Cielo started with an idea and a huge passion. The first time I visited Costa Rica, something stuck. I fell in love with the people, culture, and climate Costa Rica offered. After visiting for about two summers I decided that I was going to live here. After working in the hospitality industry for several years, I knew that I wanted to work within the industry. I have always loved taking care of people and making sure that they are happy. I want guests to experience Costa Rica in the best way possible!
Abbie is the heart of Luz. She is the owner, manager, and mother of Luz en el Cielo. She graduated from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, in 2010 with a dream to open and run a hostel in Costa Rica. Two years later, Luz en el Cielo opened. With her passion and adventurous personality, she is determined to provide every guest with the best stay possible.

The congo “howler” monkey family
The congos make Luz their home in the afternoons. You can meet and observe our congo friends in the cool afternoons, here at Luz.
The “white-faced” monkey Family
The white faced monkey family tend to come through several times a day and aren’t hesitant to interact with our guests.
Extended Family
Lisseth
Lisseth is always happy and smiling. Originally from Nicaragua, was living in Montezuma with her two brothers. So happy she found us, because we are so happy to have her part of the family. Lisseth worked at Luz for two years, but is now attending university in Nicaragua. She will always be part of Luz!
Rob
Rob is a college buddy. Abbie and Rob went to Fort Lewis College together. Rob is a mountain boy, born and raised. He is an avid skier and outdoor adventurer. Now Rob is living “la vida” for a while in the tropics.
Thomas
Thomas, the Belgium, came back to work at Luz after taking a few months off. Thomas is a super hard worker, but also knows how to have a super good time. If you need a personal waterfall guide Thomas is the guy!
Larinda
Larinda, aka The Lovely Larinda, was a former guest at Luz en el Cielo. After traveling to Costa Rica in September, Larinda returned to work at Luz three weeks later! She is originally from Wyoming, but grew up in Colorado. Always looking for a good time, and a wonderful person to get to know if you like to participate in evening activities!

Adam
Adam helped run Luz for several months. Adam and Abbie meet two years ago, in Costa Rica. When Luz was still a dream, he was originally hired by Abbie as “pool boy” but now he is our go-to. Fixer, helper, all around helpful, cheerful, welcoming guy! Now a former family member.
Jake
Jake “Hawke” Jungle Boy. Hawke also attended Fort Lewis College. He was a classmate of Adam and a friend of Abbie’s before coming to Luz en el Cielo. He was helping manage Luz. Before coming to Luz, he was studying in Puerto Rico. We have very happy to have somebody bringing us jungle food everyday as well. Now a former family member.
Katherine
Katherine, originally from Cali, but lived in Colorado, prior to her move to Costa Rica. Katherine came to Costa Rica looking for a new adventure and found us!! She is a super happy, bright, talkative individual, always ready to have a conversion!! Now a former family member.
Clifton
Clifton is another CO crew member. Clifton is our most recently hired work/stay Family member. He took a break from his nursing position in Salt Lake to come hang out with the monkeys! Now a former family member.
